Report: Sony PS4 may be priced under ?300 to give console a flying ...

Reports on Monday suggest that Sony could offer the new PS4 console for less than ?300 ($465) when it launches, as expected, later this year.

The Times cites industry sources and leaked internal documents suggesting that the launch price will be way lower than the PlayStation 3's prohibitive price of ?425 ($650) for the 60GB model when it arrived back in 2007.

The report said Sony is considering a lower entry point to give the console an instant appeal beyond the traditional early adopters, after the troubles the PS3 had snaring buyers in its formative years.

Reports emanating from Japan earlier this month suggested the PS4 could be priced as low as 40,000 Yen, which equates to around ?275 ($430) in Sterling. Surely that's a 'best case scenario' for UK gamers?

Upping the social game

Meanwhile, with the hugely-anticipated launch event looming on Wednesday February 20, rumours and reports are continuing to arrive thick and fast.

On Monday evening the Wall Street Journal said the console would expand on the PS3's social capabilities, allowing gamers to more easily share on Twitter and Facebook and post gameplay footage to YouTube.

The report also claims that online multiplayer elements will involve playing against opponents on smartphones, tablets and dedicated gaming devices like the PS Vita.

"Sony's new console may also allow users to compete against others using different hardware, such as smartphones and other portable devices," the report said.

Will these rumours come to fruition when Sony takes the stage at the special 'Future of PlayStation' launch event in New York on Wednesday evening? We'll bring you all of the news as it happens.

Until then you can whet your appetite by watching our rumours video below:

Bloomberg defends super PAC anti-gun ads in IL

(AP) ? New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg waded deeper Tuesday into the Chicago-area election to replace former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., defending his super PAC's $2 million in anti-gun ads attacking a former congresswoman and candidate in the race.

Gun control has emerged as a main issue on the campaign trail, and television commercials and mailers paid for by Bloomberg's super PAC, Independence USA, have been brought up in candidate forums, news conferences and biting emails from the 20 candidates who'll appear on the Feb. 26 primary ballot.

The ads focused on two Democrats, former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson and state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, who have had high ratings from the National Rifle Association. Then Hutchinson unexpectedly dropped out of the race last week and put her support behind another Democrat front-runner, former state Rep. Robin Kelly, who supports an assault weapons ban. Halvorson, who doesn't support a ban, has since accused Bloomberg of trying to "buy an election" and colluding with Kelly.

Bloomberg, a vocal advocate of strict gun control, said his concern is beefing up gun laws and said ? without naming a candidate ? that the NRA has convinced lawmakers that they can't win without the organization's support.

"It's just an outrage, and the public ... should stand up," he told reporters in New York. "I'm part of the public. I happen to have some money, and that's what I'm going to do with my money ? try to get us some sensible gun laws."

It's not surprising for the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent to take such a vocal stance on guns: He's the co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and has spoken widely on the issue. But singling out one race on the issue is a bit more unusual, and the action has drawn attention since it's mid-cycle.

Bloomberg launched his super PAC weeks before the November election and spent more than $12 million to back seven candidates nationwide. Guns were an issue in the election of newly-elected Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod, a California Democrat who ousted incumbent Democrat Rep. Joe Baca with Bloomberg's help. However, Bloomberg's backing hasn't always equaled success. His super PAC supported former Rep. Robert Dold, R-Ill., who lost to a Democratic businessman, Rep. Brad Schneider.

Bloomberg said there wasn't anything in particular about the Illinois race that prompted his involvement, aside from attention to gun violence.

Halvorson ? who favors universal background checks and strict gun registrations but not an assault weapons ban ? and other candidates said they didn't buy it.

"He's trying to buy a seat in Congress is what he's trying to do," she said.

Halvorson, Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale and others said the super PAC money had compromised the election. Halvorson wants a Federal Election Commission investigation. FEC officials said Tuesday they hadn't received a complaint.

Guns became a main topic early in the race in Illinois' 2nd District, which spans dense neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side, some south suburbs and more rural areas. The territory is largely Democratic, meaning the Democratic winner of next week's primary is most likely headed to Washington.

Kelly has gained momentum with key endorsements in recent days. She dismissed any notions of working with Bloomberg, which is prohibited. Super PACs are allowed to give unlimited money, but it's illegal to coordinate with candidates.

However, her opponents have blasted her campaign since Hutchinson abruptly left the race days before the election, which Halvorson called "bizarre."

Jackson, who first won the seat in 1995, resigned in November, citing his health and acknowledging he was under federal investigation. Federal prosecutors charged him last week with conspiracy for allegedly spending campaign money on personal expenses. He's agreed to plead guilty.

Israeli lawmakers to investigate Australian spy mystery

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli lawmakers announced plans on Sunday to investigate the 2010 jailhouse death of a reported Australian immigrant recruit to the Mossad spy agency.

The statement by Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee followed calls by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a cabinet meeting to dim a growing media spotlight on the affair he saw as at risk of jeopardizing national security.

The case kept under wraps for two years then publicized by Australian television last Tuesday involves a 34-year-old immigrant, Ben Zygier, said to be a Mossad operative held on suspicion of security offences, who died of what has been labeled an apparent suicide behind bars.

In a terse communique, the legislative panel's subcommittee on intelligence said it has "decided to conduct an intensive examination of all aspects of the incident involving the prisoner found dead in his (prison) cell in December 2010."

While unlikely to have any immediate political consequences the investigation may lead to a wider inquiry with potentially broader repercussions.

Netanyahu's government has restricted reporting in Israel on the case, now overshadowing his victory in a national election held last month, using court gag orders, military censorship and direct requests to news editors.

Such steps have done little to douse demands for the authorities to come clean about the circumstances of Zygier's imprisonment and how he was able to kill himself in a highly-supervised isolation cell.

Without citing the case specifically, Netanyahu said on Sunday he "absolutely trusts" Israel's security services and what he described as the independent legal monitoring system under which they operated.

"We are an exemplary democracy," Netanyahu said in remarks aired by Israeli broadcasters.

"But we are also more threatened, more challenged, and therefore we have to ensure the proper operation of our security branches," Netanyahu also said.

"Therefore I ask over everyone: Let the security services continue working quietly so that we can continue to live in safety and tranquility in the State of Israel."

The few Israeli officials who have spoken of Zygier's case have not denied that he was linked to Mossad, which in early 2010 was accused by Dubai of using Australian passport-holders to assassinate a Palestinian arms procurer in the Gulf emirate.

BETRAYED MOSSAD MISSIONS?

Media reports have speculated that Israel suspected the Melbourne-born Jew of betraying or threatening to divulge Mossad missions, perhaps to Australia's security services, as they probed passport fraud.

Civil liberties groups and some Israeli lawmakers have demanded to know whether Zygier's rights were violated by his months of incarceration under alias.

In an apparent reversal from previous statements, Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said on Thursday his ministry had known about Zygier's jailing as early as February 2010. On Wednesday he said Australian diplomats in Israel only found out about the detention after his death in custody later that year.

Avigdor Feldman, an Israeli lawyer with whom Zygier consulted in Ayalon prison, said last week that that meeting was arranged by a "Mossad liaison" and that his client had denied "grave charges" for which he awaited trial.

Feldman also said that Zygier's family, which has declined all comment on the affair, knew about his detention. The incarceration was approved by several Israeli courts.

Two senior cabinet members, Intelligence Minister Dan Meridor and Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Yaalon, told Israeli media on Saturday the case was rare but lawful.

"There are extreme situations...to do with our security and even the need to preserve human life, when we need to take an extreme step such as this," Yaalon told Channel Two television.

Meridor said that publishing the prisoner's identity would have risked "serious harm to security." He did not elaborate.

Tzachi Hanegbi, a lawmaker from Netanyahu's conservative Likud party said he had never been informed of Zygier's arrest as chairman of the parliamentary defence panel at the time.

"This requires explanation," Hanegbi said. "Usually, every significant subject, whether it is impressive achievements or embarrassing failures, is laid out before the subcommittee."

Former Mossad director Danny Yatom told Reuters the agency was under no legal obligation to brief oversight lawmakers in such circumstances.
