Asian shares tick higher, weak durable orders stall dollar

By Chikako Mogi

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares edged higher on Thursday, supported by views that a run of weak global economic data will encourage major central banks to keep or deepen their monetary stimulus, though dismal U.S. durable goods orders for March weighed on the dollar.

Oil prices, copper and gold recovered, also helping to improve sentiment towards risk assets.

"Despite the weaker data, equity markets and risk assets look generally well supported, with Q1 earnings releases and ongoing policy stimulus helping to maintain the positive tone," said Mitul Kotecha, strategist at Credit Agricole in a note.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> was up 0.3 percent, with South Korean shares <.ks11> gaining 0.5 percent as metals and chemicals rebounded on higher gold and oil prices.

Hong Kong shares <.hsi> added 0.5 percent. A 0.3 percent drop in Shanghai <.ssec> capped the rise in the pan-Asian index.

"Fund managers talk of rebalancing their portfolios away from being too tech-heavy. Oil and chemicals are attractive because shares are very cheap," said Yoo Young-kook of Seoul shares.

Early on Thursday, South Korea said its economy grew a seasonally adjusted 0.9 percent in the January-March period from the previous quarter, the fastest in two years and far above market expectations. The surprising growth dented expectations for a rate cut by the Bank of Korea.

Otherwise recent disappointing data in the United States, Europe and China has fueled expectations for a global slowdown during the spring for a third straight year.

Global equities rose on Wednesday on strong corporate earnings and speculation that the European Central Bank will cut interest rates next week.

The growing expectations of an ECB rate cut helped offset growth concerns highlighted by U.S. durable goods posting their biggest drop in seven months in March and the Ifo survey showing that German business sentiment in April fell further than the most bearish forecasts.

Despite the rate cut speculation and weak euro zone data, the euro was up 0.3 percent to $1.3050 and away from Wednesday's three-week low of $1.2954. The resilience of the single currency partly stemmed from falling yields in highly-indebted Italy and Spain and hopes Italy will break its political deadlock two months after an inconclusive election.

Adrian Foster, head of financial markets research for Asia-Pacific at Rabobank International in Hong Kong, said the main factor behind an improved tone was the recent rally in the peripheral European government bond market which reflected waning fears about an euro zone implosion.

"We've already been seeing the market evolve from the European crisis to focus more on specific issues in a country or events," he said, adding that it was a positive development that investors were reverting to behavior seen before the financial crisis.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> hit its highest since June 2008 earlier on Wednesday, as a weakening yen bolstered expectations for improved corporate earnings. The index was last up 0.1 percent.

Most observers have welcomed an April 4 decision by the Bank of Japan to embark on a radical monetary expansion campaign That could help the global economy. The BOJ plans to inject about $1.4 trillion into the world's third-largest economy in less than two years in an effort to end two decades of stagnation.

"The weaker yen is having a positive effect on companies' earnings, which in turn is lifting stocks," he said. "For now, we see this trend continuing," said Hiroichi Nishi, an assistant general manager at SMBC Nikko Securities.

Japan's capital flows data showed on Thursday that Japanese investors remained net sellers of foreign bonds, in line with comments from big life insurers that they remain cautious about immediately shifting their money out of Japanese government bonds into foreign bonds.

Japanese investors sold a net 862.6 billion yen of foreign bonds in the week to April 20, while foreign investors turned net sellers of Japanese shares.

The dollar was down 0.1 percent at 99.37 yen, still within sight of testing the symbolic 100 yen level which many traders say is just a matter of time. Against a basket of key currencies, the dollar <.dxy> was down 0.4 percent.

The U.S. government's report on gross domestic product due on Friday is expected to show the economy grew at a 3.0 percent annual rate in the first quarter, rebounding from a 0.4 percent gain in the final three months of 2012.

For the current quarter, economists are looking for expansion of only around 1.5 percent or so.

On the corporate front, of the 174 companies in the S&P 500 index that already have reported results, 68.4 percent have exceeded analysts' expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data through Wednesday morning.

U.S. crude rose 0.5 percent to $91.87. a barrel and Brent was up 0.5 percent at $102.20.

Spot gold jumped 1.1 percent to $1,445.45 an ounce while London copper rose 0.4 percent to $7,060 a metric ton (1.1023 tons).

Rethinking early atmospheric oxygen: Possibility of more dynamic biological oxygen cycle on early Earth than previously supposed

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A research team of biogeochemists at the University of California, Riverside has provided a new view on the relationship between the earliest accumulation of oxygen in the atmosphere, arguably the most important biological event in Earth history, and its relationship to the sulfur cycle.

A general consensus exists that appreciable oxygen first accumulated in Earth's atmosphere around 2.4 to 2.3 billion years ago. Though this paradigm is built upon a wide range of geological and geochemical observations, the famous "smoking gun" for what has come to be known as the "Great Oxidation Event" (GOE) comes from the disappearance of anomalous fractionations in rare sulfur isotopes.

"These isotope fractionations, often referred to as 'mass-independent fractionations,' or 'MIF' signals, require both the destruction of sulfur dioxide by ultraviolet energy from the sun in an atmosphere without ozone and very low atmospheric oxygen levels in order to be transported and deposited in marine sediments," said Christopher T. Reinhard, the lead author of the research paper and a former UC Riverside graduate student. "As a result, their presence in ancient rocks is interpreted to reflect vanishingly low atmospheric oxygen levels continuously for the first ~2 billion years of Earth's history."

However, diverse types of data are emerging that point to the presence of atmospheric oxygen, and, by inference, the early emergence of oxygenic photosynthesis hundreds of millions of years before these MIF signals disappear from the rock record. These observations motivated Reinhard and colleagues to explore the possible conditions under which inherited MIF signatures may have persisted in the rock record long after oxygen accumulated in the atmosphere.

Using a simple quantitative model describing how sulfur and its isotopes cycle through Earth's crust, the researchers discovered that under certain conditions these MIF signatures can persist within the ocean and marine sediments long after O2 increases in the atmosphere. Simply put, the weathering of rocks on the continents can transfer the MIF signal to the oceans and their sediments long after production of this fingerprint has ceased in an oxygenated atmosphere.

"This lag would blur our ability to date the timing of the GOE and would allow for dynamic rising and falling oxygen levels during a protracted transition from an atmosphere without oxygen to one rich in this life-giving gas," Reinhard said.

Study results appear in Nature's advanced online publication on April 24.

Reinhard explained that once MIF signals formed in an oxygen-poor atmosphere are captured in pyrite and other minerals in sedimentary rocks, they are recycled when those rocks are later uplifted as mountain ranges and the pyrite is oxidized.

"Under certain conditions, this will create a sort of 'memory effect' of these MIF signatures, providing a decoupling in time between the burial of MIF in sediments and oxygen accumulation at Earth's surface," he said.

According to the researchers, the key here is burying a distinct MIF signal in deep sea sediments, which are then subducted and removed from Earth's surface.

"This would create a complementary signal in minerals that are weathered and delivered to the oceans, something that we actually see evidence of in the rock record," said Noah Planavsky, the second author of the research paper and a former UC Riverside graduate student now at Caltech. "This signal can then be perpetuated through time without the need to generate it within the atmosphere contemporaneously."

Reinhard, now a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech and soon to be an assistant professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, explained that although the researchers' new model provides a plausible mechanism for reconciling recent conflicting data, this can only occur when certain key conditions are met -- and these conditions are likely to have changed through time during Earth's long early history.

"There is obviously much further work to do, but we hope that our model is one step toward a more integrated view of how Earth's crust, mantle and atmosphere interact in the global sulfur cycle," he said.

Timothy W. Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry at UCR and the principal investigator of the research project noted that this is a fundamentally new and potentially very important way of looking at the sulfur isotope record and its relationship to biospheric oxygenation.

"The message is that sulfur isotope records, when viewed through the filter of sedimentary recycling, may challenge efforts to precisely date the GOE and its relationship to early life, while opening the door to the wonderful unknowns we should expect and embrace," he said.

How To Grow Your Business? Fast! - E-junkie.info

It doesn't seem two minutes since we were bringing in the start of 2013 with balloons and buzz, and yet I'm still going to ask you an interesting question. Have you thought where you may be in 2014? If I mention the date to you, do you stop and frown, wondering why I'm asking you to consider your whereabouts at a time when you've only just found your feet in the current year?

2014. It feels like forever away. And yet, in business, it's the next logical step to consider. It's just around the corner when we think about our strategic approach, direction, and the future success of our online venture.

The importance of future planning for blogging and business

More than in any other industry, looking ahead for online entrepreneurs is critical to shaping the success of what we do. We need to position ourselves well amid all of the new technologies, social networks, strategic approaches of our competitors and online developments to make sure we stay current, relevant and useful to our customers.

There's a really powerful tool used by psychologists with their patients, where they get them to close their eyes and imagine what and who they will be in the future. This includes asking questions such as 'what is your hairstyle like'? 'what are you wearing?' 'where are you sitting, and what is your job?'. These questions serve to cement goals in the mind of the person being questioned. So, for example, someone suffering with depression can think ahead and imagine a time when they will be laughing, free of the illness.

Using the power of projected thinking to cement your goals

Life coaches do the same thing to get people to picture themselves in the future, even down to the colour of their clothing, so that the client can start to place themselves, in their minds, at a positive position in the future. This imagining really helps to focus the mind, accept that things will be different and better at some point at a later stage, and serves to cement a positive, enduring image which helps goals to be realised more quickly, as the alternative future looks possible and achievable.

So what would happen if I asked you to do the same for your business? It's important to be able to close your eyes and see exactly what your position in 2014 will be. How many customers do you have? What products are you?focusing?on? What are your primary tools for marketing? Which aspects of your business do you outsource? What does your site look like, what new developments have you made?

How visualising the future of your business will make your goals?materialize

This exercise may seem a bit pre-emptive, but without having a firm idea of where your business is headed, you'll find yourself in the thick of 2014 having made no new strides forward to achieve your goals. By positioning your business where it will ideally be next year, you're automatically kicking off a thought process which then works back to the present day and forges activities and plans for achieving those strategic aims.

You'll suddenly find yourself broadening your outlook to bring in new developments. You'll question some current activities to see if they are really contributing to your vision of 2014. Best of all, by the time 2014 actually rolls around, you'll be so well established on your path to success that you can spend time planning a party, taking a few days out and seeing in the New Year safe in the knowledge that your online venture has evolved and there is no last-minute planning to do!

ALS trial shows novel therapy is safe

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

An investigational treatment for an inherited form of Lou Gehrig's disease has passed an early phase clinical trial for safety, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Massachusetts General Hospital report.

The researchers have shown that the therapy produced no serious side effects in patients with the disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The phase 1 trial's results, available online in Lancet Neurology, also demonstrate that the drug was successfully introduced into the central nervous system.

The treatment uses a technique that shuts off the mutated gene that causes the disease. This approach had never been tested against a condition that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

"These results let us move forward in the development of this treatment and also suggest that it's time to think about applying this same approach to other mutated genes that cause central nervous system disorders," says lead author Timothy Miller, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurology at Washington University. "These could include some forms of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and other conditions."

ALS destroys nerves that control muscles, gradually leading to paralysis and death. For treatment of the disease, the sole FDA-approved medication, Riluzole, has only a marginal effect.

Most cases of ALS are sporadic, but about 10 percent are linked to inherited mutations. Scientists have identified changes in 10 genes that can cause ALS and are still looking for others.

The study focused on a form of ALS caused by mutations in a gene called SOD1, which account for 2 percent of all ALS cases. Researchers have found more than 100 mutations in the SOD1 gene that cause ALS.

"At the molecular level, these mutations affect the properties of the SOD1 protein in a variety of ways, but they all lead to ALS," says Miller, who is director of the Christopher Wells Hobler Lab for ALS Research at the Hope Center for Neurological Disorders at Washington University.

Rather than try to understand how each mutation causes ALS, Miller and his colleagues focused on blocking production of the SOD1 protein using a technique called antisense therapy.

To make a protein, cells have to copy the protein-building instructions from the gene. Antisense therapy blocks the cell from using these copies, allowing researchers to selectively silence individual genes.

"Antisense therapy has been considered and tested for a variety of disorders over the past several decades," Miller says. "For example, the FDA recently approved an antisense therapy called Kynamro for familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition that increases cholesterol levels in the blood."

Miller and colleagues at the University of California-San Diego devised an antisense drug for SOD1 and successfully tested it in an animal model of the disease.

Merit Cudkowicz, MD, chief of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, was co-PI of the phase I clinical safety trial described in the new paper. Clinicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Methodist Neurological Institute in Houston gave antisense therapy or a placebo to 21 patients with SOD1-related ALS. Treatment consisted of spinal infusions that lasted 11 hours.

The scientists found no significant difference between side effects in the control and treatment groups. Headache and back pain, both of which are often associated with spinal infusion, were among the most common side effects.

Immediately after the injections, the researchers took spinal fluid samples. This let them confirm the antisense drug was circulating in the spinal fluid of patients who received the treatment.

To treat SOD1-related ALS in the upcoming phase II trial, researchers will need to increase the dosage of the antisense drug. As the dose rises, they will watch to ensure that the therapy does not cause harmful inflammation or other side effects as it lowers SOD1 protein levels.

"All the information that we have so far suggests lowering SOD1 will be safe," Miller says. "In fact, completely disabling SOD1 in mice seems to have little to no effect. We think it will be OK in patients, but we won't know for sure until we've conducted further trials."

The therapy may one day be helpful in the more common, noninherited forms of ALS, some of which may be linked to problems with the SOD1 protein.

"Before we can consider using this same therapy for sporadic ALS, we need more evidence that SOD1 is a major contributor to these forms of the disorder," Miller says.

Of course you'll put up with ads in your Facebook Home

Mark Zuckerberg

It was a simple, direct question asked more than once today at Facebook HQ in Menlo Park in Silicon Valley. There are ads on Facebook. Will there be ads in Facebook Home, the new Android home screen replacement (along with its snazzy if underwhelming new phone) that'll be available starting next week?

Apparently those of us in the audience needed a little clarification, despite the answer having been delivered just minutes before.

"Yup," said Mark Zuckerberg, this time leaving absolutely no doubt.

At some point, Facebook Home will have ads. Not next week, but somewhere down the road.

And you'll be perfectly OK with that. And if you're not, it won't matter.

Wifi-only Samsung Galaxy Camera headed to the U.S. 'this month' for $450

Galaxy Camera

Samsung's Wifi-only smart camera is only slightly cheaper than the cellular version

Samsung has announced that it'll launch the Wifi-only version of its Android-powered Galaxy Camera in the United States this month. The Wifi-only Galaxy Camera will sell for $449.99 at "authorized Samsung retailers." That's cheaper than the $499.99 cost of the AT&T version, but not by a whole lot. The saving compared to the Verizon 4G LTE model is a bit more substantial -- that device still sells for $549.99.

The Wifi-only Galaxy Camera sports the same internals as its cellular cousin -- a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos CPU, 720p LCD, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean backing up the 12-megapixel shooter with 21X optical zoom.

We reviewed the 3G/HSPA version of the Galaxy Camera late last year and were impressed with its Android-based UI and sharing capabilities, though we found the overall image quality a little lacking for a camera in this price range. The addition of the Wifi-only model at a lower price point could be a smart move to get the Galaxy Camera into more consumers' hands, but we can't help thinking the starting price could be a little lower.

For more on the Galaxy Camera, be sure to check out our full review.

93% No

All Critics (87) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (81) | Rotten (6)

"No" is a picture that perches precariously on the cusp of a paradox.

A cunning and richly enjoyable combination of high-stakes drama and media satire from Chilean director Pablo Larrain.

A mesmerizing, realistic and often hilarious look at the politics of power and the power of ideas ...

A political drama, a personal drama, a sharp-eyed study of how the media manipulate us from all sides, No reels and ricochets with emotional force.

It's a funny look at the way the media warp public opinion, and a curiously hopeful one.

On every level, "No" leaves one with bittersweet feelings about democracy, love and the cost of compromise.

It's clear that the language of advertising has become universal, and that political commodities can be sold like soap. But toppling a dictatorship? Now there's a story.

A reflection of a moment in time, made in the image of that moment.

Bernal deftly explores the layers of the character's complexity, including his political apathy.

"No" is filmmaking of the first order.

Old technology plus the packaging of a revolution add up to a Yes

Freshens up a decades-old story with vibrant humor and a good sense of storytelling.

No continually impresses for its slyness and savvy -- rarely has such an eyesore been so worth watching.

Larrain fashions an unlikely crowd-pleaser from a historical episode that has its share of tragedy as well as triumph.

Stirring as a celebration of voter empowerment, No may also inspire pangs of wistful nostalgia.

Fascinating work from director Pablo Larrain and screenwriter Pedro Peirano, who manage to slip into the skin of a beleaguered country and detail the urgency of a revolution, sold one jingle at a time.

Swims upstream against high-definition with a defiantly lo-fi approach that's also ingeniously evocative of the historical period.

Wildly colorful strokes, full of bitter humor.

Fourth death from new bird flu in China

BEIJING (AP) ? A middle-aged man who transported poultry for a living has died from a new strain of bird flu, the fourth death among 11 confirmed cases in China, the government and state media reported Thursday.

The 48-year-old man, who died in Shanghai, is one of several among the infected believed to have had direct contact with fowl, which may carry the virus. Until recently, the virus, known as H7N9, was not known to infect humans.

It is not known how people are becoming sick with the virus, and health officials and scientists caution that there are no indications it can be transmitted from one person to another. Scientists who have studied the virus's genetic sequence said this week that the virus may have mutated, spreading more easily to other animals and potentially posing a bigger threat to humans.

Guidelines issued Wednesday by the national health agency identify butchers, breeders and sellers of poultry, and those in the meat processing industry as at higher risk.

Experts only identified the first cases on Sunday. Some among the 11 confirmed cases fell ill several weeks ago but only now are being classified as having H7N9.

The government of Shanghai said that in addition to the man's death and two previously confirmed cases, there are three other suspected cases.

3 ND teachers suspended after child left in cold

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ? Three teachers at a North Dakota YMCA have been suspended amid allegations they made a 4-year-old boy stand outside in the cold as punishment.

A parent spotted the boy without a coat outside of the Y Learning Center on Monday morning in Fargo, KVLY-TV reported. The boy allegedly told the parent that he was being punished. The parent, in turn, called police.

YMCA staff told the TV station that the teachers were having trouble getting the child to put on his outdoor apparel, so they took the child and his clothes outside and "had him stand on his snowsuit and were waiting for him to be ready to put it on."

The teachers did not follow proper procedure, officials said.

"Our policy specifically states that we do not use any kind of punishment that would take away warmth, food, sleep, that kind of thing," YMCA Vice President Lorrie Thoemke said.

The center aims to let children play outside every day unless wintry conditions are too extreme. Early Monday, temperatures were in the mid-teens.

"By no means would this be proper procedure to take a child out for discipline reasons without proper clothing on," Thoemke said.

The 4-year-old was brought inside and properly dressed by another staff member, and the three teachers involved are now suspended, officials said.

Findstad said the Y is reviewing policies with its staff. Letters went out Monday to parents to explain what had happened.

KVLY reported that two children have been pulled from the program ? the boy who was left outside and the child of the parent who reported spotting him.

DIY CareMoo Cow Crafts + Festive Cupcake Recipe | Care2 Healthy ...

Due to a plea from one of our favorite cows (Bessie the Holstein), Care2 has become CareMoo for the day. Can you feel the love? Thanks to everyone for the call to action and sweet words via the petition. In order to properly celebrate this momentous occasion, we thought we?d focus on our favorite cow related DIY project and a round up of awesome handmades. Of course, y?all know I won?t pass up the chance to include an awesome cupcake recipe and I?ve found just the perfect one for today!

COWS ARE COMING HOME CUPCAKE

Debbie from ?Life is Sweets? made these adorable cow cupcakes by making simple vanilla cupcakes, and adding a homemade cow face. To make the cow face, she bought pre-made white, black and pink fondant from Michael?s. She used candy eyes and black decorating gel for the snouts.

Debbie used a graduated circle cookie cutter to make the head, the smaller ?snout? area and the ears.

She assembled the pieces in this order:

  • Large circle head
  • Pink circle snout pressed onto the head
  • Black spots randomly placed on the head
  • Pressed in the eyes
  • She rolled bits of white fondant to make a ?snake? sort of shape for the horns
  • She rolled pink fondant on top of black fondant and then cut circle shapes with a cutter.

She let the cow faces dry overnight, and then made simple vanilla cupcakes. On the cupcakes, she added a dollop of buttercream icing on top, and then pressed a cow on top:

The process took about 2 hours of rolling, cutting, shaping and placement. For more details, visit her blog here: Debbie Sweets

According to the latest round of reports, a new line of 5.8 and 6.3-inchers.

?Today's report comes from SamMobile, which has a pretty solid track record when it comes to unannounced Samsung devices. Reportedly the Galaxy Mega 5.8 (GT-i9152) will pack a 5.8-inch screen and appear from the week commencing May 27. Similarly, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 (GT-i9200) should pack a 6.3-inch screen and emerge around the week starting Jun. 17. The new "Mega" branding is apparently a replacement for the (somewhat cringeworthy) "Galaxy Fonblet" name that was being bandied about prior to MWC.

No details on internal specs are offered, but the product codes suggest neither "Galaxy Mega" device will be a particularly high-end handset. What's mode, the Galaxy Mega 5.8's code suggests it may be offered in a dual-SIM "Duos" variant, like the Galaxy Grand. What's more, the Mega 6.3's size would tie in nicely with the limits of Samsung's recently-announced game pad accessory.

So would you be tempted by a possible mid-range handset with this screen size? Let us know down in the comments!

South Africa: Mandela in hospital on Easter

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Former South African President Nelson Mandela had a restful day in a hospital Sunday and is improving following treatment for a recurrence of pneumonia, the government said.

The office of President Jacob Zuma thanked South Africans who prayed for 94-year-old Mandela at Easter church services this weekend, as well as people at home and around the world who showed their "love and support in various ways" for the anti-apartheid leader and his family.

"We also thank foreign governments for their messages of support," Zuma's office said in a statement.

The government "is satisfied that the doctors are providing the former president with the best medical care possible to enable his recovery and comfort. They have reported a further improvement in his condition," the statement said.

Mandela was admitted to a Pretoria hospital near midnight Wednesday. It was his third trip to a hospital since December, when he was treated for a lung infection and also had a procedure to remove gallstones. Earlier in March, he spent a night in a hospital for what officials said was a scheduled medical test.

"The whole world must come together and pray for him," Zacheus Phakathi, a security guard, said Sunday at an outdoor service on a hill overlooking Johannesburg.

In Pretoria, the capital, Henry Hyar, a restaurant waiter, standing by a hospital where Mandela is believed to be, said it was unfortunate that Mandela could not be with his family at home during Easter.

"I'm not happy about it," Hyar said. "We're praying for him to get better as soon as possible."

On Saturday, Zuma's office reported that Mandela was breathing without difficulty after having a procedure to clear fluid in his lung area.

Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994 after elections were held, bringing an end to the system of white racist rule known as apartheid. After his release from prison in 1990, Mandela was widely credited with averting even greater bloodshed by helping the country in the transition to democratic rule.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been particularly vulnerable to respiratory problems since contracting tuberculosis during his 27-year imprisonment for fighting white racist rule in his country.

The elderly are especially vulnerable to pneumonia, which can be fatal. Its symptoms include fever, chills, a cough, chest pain and shortness of breath. Many germs cause pneumonia.

The office of President Jacob Zuma has said doctors were acting with extreme caution because of the Mandela's advanced age.

Fighting erupts after car bombing in Mali

By Tiemoko Diallo

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Malian soldiers backed by French fighter jets battled Islamist rebels in Timbuktu on Sunday after insurgents used a car bomb as cover to infiltrate the northern desert town, sources said.

The French-led offensive in Mali has pushed a mix of Islamists out of their northern strongholds and remote mountain bases but the militants have hit back with several suicide attacks and guerilla-style raids.

At least one Malian soldier was killed and four injured in Sunday's fighting in the ancient Saharan trading hub 1,000 km (600 miles) north of the capital Bamako, according to a Mali government communique issued on Sunday evening.

It said that 21 Islamist rebels were also killed.

"It started after a suicide car bombing around 2200, that served to distract the military and allow a group of jihadists to infiltrate the city by night," said Mali army Captain Modibo Naman Traore.

Bilal Toure, a member of Timbuktu's crisis committee set up after the town was recaptured from Islamist control in January, said he saw a French plane firing on the rebel positions. He said fighting had died down since nightfall.

"The situation settled down after around 1900 but everyone is still staying indoors," he said.

The attack reflected the challenge of securing Mali as France prepares to reduce its troop presence and hand over to the ill-equipped Malian army and a more than 7,000-strong regional African force.

Mali's defense ministry said on Saturday that two Nigerian soldiers in the regional African force were killed when their convoy struck a mine outside Ansongo, near the Niger border.

France launched its intervention in Mali in January to halt an advance by northern al Qaeda-linked rebels towards Bamako.

President Francois Hollande said on Thursday that France will reduce its troop numbers in Mali to 2,000 by July and to 1,000 by the end of the year, down from 4,000 at present.

The West African former colony is to hold presidential and legislative elections in July - vital steps to stabilizing the gold- and cotton-producer after a military coup a year ago paved the way for the northern rebel takeover.
