Tempers are flaring between China and Japan over ownership of islands in the South China sea. The territory, called Senkaku Islands in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, has been in dispute for centuries. Tensions have grown in the last few years after a Chinese boat crashed into a Japanese Coast Guard vessel here. This year Japan attempted to buy the islands from a family that had been leasing it, only to see China send patrol boats into the area. Even South Korea is involved, sparring with Japan over another disputed island chain.
While these games of chicken go on, the United States is positioning manpower and developing technology to counter the growing military might of China. Earlier this year the Obama administration announced a strategic refocus on the Pacific. Check out the specifics of the move here.
One of those assets that will be refocused on the Pacific is the B-1 bomber. B-1 pilots recently visited PM's office, and discussed changes to their training meant to counter China.
In addition, the U.S. has now moved a drone into Guam to keep an eye on China. The MQ-4C Broad Area Maritime Surveillance Triton, revealed just this summer, will begin operations in the Pacific around 2017.
For now, China-U.S. conflicts consist mainly of shadowy cyberwar and subtle saber-rattling. Back in 2010, however, we imagined what a shooting war between the U.S. and China might look like.
